Functional Traits Working Group

Report of the ICAR WG on recording, evaluation and genetic improvement of functional traits in dairy cattle

• Chairman
        - Erling Strandberg (Erling.Strandberg@hgen.slu.se)
• Members
        - Lucy Andrews (lucyandrews@holstein-uk.org)
        - Nicholas Gengler (gengler.n@fsagx.ac.be)
        - Christa Egger-Danner (egger-danner@zuchtdata.at)
        - Jennie Pryce (jpryce@lic.co.nz)

The objective of the working group is to write a portfolio of recommendation sheets on recording, evaluation and genetic improvement for functional traits in dairy cattle. Recommendation sheets will be written for seven functional trait groups:

• udder health
• female and male fertility
• calving ease and stillbirth
• feet and legs problems
• workability
• longevity
• metabolic stress and feed efficiency

The udder health is done and available on the ICAR Guidelines. During the period, the working group has been reconstituted. Johann Sφlkner has asked to be removed from the group – in his place Christa Egger-Danner has joined. She is working at ZuchtData, the organization responsible for the genetic evaluation in Austria. We have also added more members to the group: Jennie Pryce, working at Livestock Improvement Centre in New Zealand and Lucy Andrews of Holstein UK.

The new group (except Jennie Pryce) had its first meeting at the ICAR meeting in Kuopio 2006. The first draft of the guidelines for female fertility was discussed at the meeting and a revised version based on that discussion will be sent to the members by July 1, 2006. This will then be worked on by the members during the fall.
After female fertility we will start working on guidelines for feet and legs.

This page has been visited Hit Counter times since 20 July 2006.
